One special feature of the holdings of the Burgerbibliothek of Berne is the so-called individual items. These are documents or small collections which do not form part of larger archives. They include curiosities, recipe books, friendship albums, genealogical notes with coloured coats of arms, travel reports and diaries, along with part of the publishing archives of Carl Langlois dating from the first half of the 19th century and the oldest surviving herbarium in Switzerland, from the 16th century.
